Hi Chris,

Thanks for that. Yes, I too must use Windows at work, but in a way it's good... don't want to lose those skills! I know, I'm finding the cursor thing a bit confusing when editing on the iPhone, but getting used to it!

Thanks again,

Russell

Subject: [macvoiceover] Re: Ready to take the plunge, but...

While all of my personal stuff is done on one of the pair of Macs we have in the house, I need, for my work, to use XP and Vista with a variety of screen readers and orca on GNU/Linux distributions. At first, I stumbled all over the place when using Mac but it wasn't that different from moving JAWS to Window-Eyes (for instance) as they are just different enough to be infuriating.

Now, I have a 30 minute rule. Walk away from my workstation (a Mac that uses Fusion to launch all of the other OS) for about a half hour to clear my head of one screen reader/OS combination and be able to approach the next one "fresh." This also helps with my repetitive stress injuries and also gives me time to perform a mental context switch between two different projects.

So, if a dullard like me can handle up to seven different screen readers in a day, I'm confident that you will be able to pick up Mac pretty quickly. The only difference between Mac, Windows and GNU/ Linux systems that drives me completely nutty is the speaking of the insertion point on the Mac because, while this would seem minor it will often cause a beginner to make a lot of typing errors because they assume that the insertion point is always to the left of the item spoken. Years ago, on outSPOKEN for the Mac, Peter Korn invented the technique of always having the speech say the character, word, etc. to the immediate right of the insertion point. Every screen reader on every OS except VO on Mac has followed this convention since. It's not so bad after a some practice.

Finally, ask as many questions as you need. I think most of us had used Windows before and understand the migration process.

yes, but this is more the fault of the maker of the phone screen reader and the notetaker maker than it is the mac. But, yes, there are some things you must use windows for. I still must use windows for my work because it is required.

Well, I had a Windows machine that crashed, so I needed to purchase a new computer. I have had the iMac for almost a year now, and I only find a few things which I wish I had Windows for. Such as installing my screen reader for my cell phone, getting firmware for my notetaker, and such. I still haven't installed Windows on this Mac, and right now, I'm guessing I can use someone's computer if I *really* need Windows.

I don't know how to say this but I'm going to try and say something which some may find useful.

As long as you think you have a better solution than vo, you will never learn the power of it. I went through this thing where gee, I can use jaws so much faster than vo and then one day, found myself breezing through web sites and using things like the item chooser, the links list, the find commands on the mac and one day, I picked up my pc after a long time of not using it and just could not use jaws as efficiently any more. what with all those keystrokes, jumping in and out of forms mode and so on, I found the mac finally to be much more efficient. I then did some analysis for hard factual data and realized that what I was experiencing was born out. fewer keystrokes are necessary. less guess work is necessary. navigation is easier, getting to what is needed or desired is easier.

This is not a me thing. this is not a preference thing or an us vs them thing, I am glad jaws was around when I needed it and didn't have anything else. You do though have to apply yourself to the mac as though you have nothing else to use to realize the full power of it.

Hi Russ,

I've had a mac for 14 months and I too find using the keystrokes to be second nature. I must say though I use my windows Pc for my intensive web browsing sessions. I just don't like the internet on the mac using voiceover in comparison to windows with jaws. Don't get me wrong, The browser with voiceover is useable on the mac, but I just feel like I can navigate quicker on my windows machine.

Hi all,

Okay, I'm ready to take the plunge and buy an iMac 20", but have just one final question for everyone before I do...

I'm sure, like me, most of you have come from using Windows with either Jaws or WindowEyes. For those of you who have been using the Mac for a while now, would you say that you're as productive on the Mac as you once were on Windows? I mean, for me, using Jaws is second nature to me... I don't even need to think about what keystrokes to use, I just interact with whatever program I need to to complete a given task. Now, I know I've also been using Jaws for some 15 years now, so don't expect to get to this level of proficiency overnight, but what do you long time Mac users think? Has using the VO keystrokes become second nature to you? Once one uses the Mac for a while, does navigating in Safari become as easy as navigating IE with Jaws or WE?

Thanks for any and all opinions!

Russell
