If you are using snow leopard there should be nothing for you to do wrong.  I 
have never used group mode to navigate the web though.  I always use dom mode.  
I don't know if this makes a difference or not.  To change from dom and group 
mode go to voiceover utilities...VO F8, and arrow down to web in the table.
