Hi
On my system the behavior works as follows, this applies to all apps that I have speaking: • If voiceover is speaking a long section of text, the speech from the application is put on hold until VO is done, either by letting VO finish or by shutting it up • If VO is speaking something short, the application may or may not override VO
• If the application is speaking, VO will *always* interrupt it
In general, VO seems to have a higher priority than the applications do.
Another thing that can happen, in particular with Adium since it bounces its dock icon by default, is that VO sees this and says "adium," meaning it wants your attention. This will override what VO is currently speaking, as it's a notification. After VO is done speaking this, the application will come in and speak because VO interrupted itself to let you know of the application bouncing in the dock. If you don't allow Adium to bounce the dock icon this won't occur--I usually let this happen, though, as I find it handy. Anyway, I hope that isn't too confusing, I'm sure someone can probably explain it a little better than I just did.

What seems to happpen in my case is that it waits for VO to finish speaking before it says something. It seems that you have to be careful not to let VO talk. I also have mine playing sounds in most cases.
