Hey Everyone,

Thought I'd weigh in on this debate.

To Travis' defense, he's right, everyone is different - that's what makes people so interesting, and sometimes, so frustrating.

Trust me on this - being a programmer, I'm *sure* he's encountered some *very* difficult programming challenges - some which he hasn't understood for a long while, but eventually does - some he'll probably never understand! FYI, I can think of a difficult challenge, right off the bat - the issues I'm having with his SoftCon NewsReader! On my machine, I have *no* menu bar, can't use the popups in the preferences, and can't read either the "feeds" table, or the "Articles" table. Throw on top of all this - VO crashes when I try to navigate to where the content area should be! I'm running Leopard, where it's supposed to work, but on my system, not so much! It works on his machines, but that doesn't mean there's not a machine-specific issue which needs resolving. He'll get it figured out, and fixed, but it might take a while.

My point: Human interactions are a two-way street. A programmer can't fix an issue with his software, if the end-users don't provide him with explicit details! Same logic applies to this list -- give folks clear, concise details, (as best you can), and you have a lot better chance of getting your problems resolved! In my issue above, the details I've provided Travis with, just might make things better for *all* VO users, in the long run!

As to Google: It works quite well! For example, I need to get a new Tv antenna, as I'm about 45 miles away from the stations I need to receive, digital Tv is looming ever-larger on the horizon, and my antenna's beat to heck, and doesn't really perform well, anymore. ? With a little work with Google, I actually found an *excellent* article on choosing an antenna for HD Tv.

Through this article, my roommate, and I, were provided with links to tools which told us our precise latitude & longitude, magnetic declination, and finally, gave us a listing of all the analog and digital stations in our area - where they're located, distance from us, etc. For our particular situation, we learned that we need a long- range unidirectional antenna, we might benefit from an antenna preamp, and a rotor might serve us well, as well. Point is: Google, and other search engines, work! You just need patience, persaverence, and a little luck, and you can find most things - but not all, obviously.

For the record, VersionTracker & SourceForge.net can be real allies too! If I want software, VT is the *first* place I go!

Just remember: Computers are only as smart as the data you give them (i.e. Search Engines work well, if you give them good search terms!), and people are only going to be as effective at answering your questions, and helping you solve your problems, as the questions you ask, and the information you provide them with! It's no more complicated than that!

Hope my $0.50 worth has "clarified" a few things? <grin!>

Take care!

Ron

Sheesh, if I'd known that a simple comment like googol is your friend would envoke such a torrent, I'd have not bothered to post the url to help out. I was simply saying that often times, you can find what you're looking for on googol (or on your favorite search engine if googol isn't it) and that the link posted in the email I provided was pulled from a googol search, not from any archive I had stashed around here somewhere. I'm puzzled as to the programmer reference though, I wasn't aware you needed to be a programmer to use a search engine.
But, I digress.
Once again, it appears my simple straightforward approach has landed me in hot water. I'm only trying to help, but if you really don't want it, then just say so, and I'll not bother to respond to any more of your posts. And, as for the configuration, you never actually asked for it, your response to my offer was a comment that if it's a terminal app, you're not a terminal user, and I assumed that meant you didn't want to be bothered with another command-line utility.
Apparently, this was the wrong conclusion based on the response here.
I'll get it to you in the next day or two, and in future, I'll try to be more clear about what exactly it is I'm trying to state instead of allowing others to draw their own conclusions from my statements. I apologize for any problems I have/will/has/who knows/will cause to be caused on this list. either now in the past, or in the future. We're all different people, and what is clear to one is not so clear to another, it's simple enough to ask for clarification, instead of jumping to conclusions.

But all of that is neither here nor there, and this post is likely to be deemed off topic, so I'll attempt to refrain from further replies on this topic.

I agree with what she has said here. Travis, google is great, but when you have looked on google for something for ovfer 300 years it seems. O, BTW, I haven't gotten that configuration file for ncftpd you promised me that I e-mailed you back asking for, either.

Also, Remember not everyone on this list is a programmer. No I am not a mod, but in all do respect sir, I wish you'd kind a tone down your tone a bit. You were once where a lotta us are, so don't use your programming skills as a way of making it sound quote: easy. What is easy to you may be hard to someone else.

Let me put a book in front a you that is written in the African language of Bombada which is the native language of Moli, and have you sit here and try to read that, and say it's hard, now you get a native who comes up to you, who says, o, that's simple, being able to speak is your friend. hubba hubba hubba, and then he just starts reading it 90 miles an hour like Mr. motor mouth.

Now, how do you feel. Empherior? Thought so.

I rest my case. Again, don't take it personally, but, think on what I said.

Chris.

Google is your friend, but that particular page is very frustrating. rondo
announced it had encountered a problem and needed to close with no
explanation. i forget what Mighty Midi did but it wasn't helpful. Sweet midi finally worked somewhat and I actually found that further down the google page as a version tracker entry since I decided twice- bitten by
that other link was enough for a while. . Google is your friend but
sometimes you also
need a huge amount of perseveerance too. since I'm going nowhere with readiris at the moment, I decided to divert my frustration to the mid
problem.
