I certainly am not someone who constantly needs the newest of something. I was
just concerned that since it's not getting any more updates it may compromise
the security of my computer. Also, Apple told me that it would be quite costly
to look at the battery to see what is going on. I'm not sure it's the battery
because when I plug it into the charger it doesn't connect and less I finagle
it and then it still doesn't stay most of the time. The computer is going on
eight years old so I have gotten a lot of life out of it. But if I could find a
cost-effective way to fix it without getting a new one then I obviously would
do that first. I was just asking about newer models in case this one doesn't
have much life left to it.
I will have a look at the MacBook Air in the Mac Mini. Thanks for the
suggestions. I'm going to keep mine as long as possible before even looking
into something else.

Based on your described usage, why do you want to have a computer that is
“still receiving updates?” If it’s able to surf the net, check email, & do
word processing, where’s the problem? Seems like your “work-flow” need is
met.
I do understand the battery issue. Here in Arizona, we have a place in
Tempe, part of the Phoenix metropolitan area, called The Mac Exchange that
takes care of those kinds of issues. I’ve sent two Mac’s from Tucson & had
them back within a week to a week-&-a-half. In both cases, I spent less than
$100 & the computers were cleaned out thoroughly—dust & pet hair removed—&
batteries replaced. Did I mention the results were great?
I’m not questioning your right to spend your money anyway you want to. It’s
your business & your right. However, I see so many people wanting the latest
& greatest device, when the truth is what there holding in their hand or on
their lap has much more processing power than they could ever use. But,
keep in mind I just upgraded from my iPhone 5, because my 16-year-old needs a
phone. And, I had that thing for a really long time.
Just my two cents & probably not worth even that much. But so that this MSG
is not an entire waste, my mother-in-law got a Mini last year & I think,
because she had a monitor, we were able to get the Mini, the mouse, & the
bluetooth keyboard for $650 or there about. But, seriously consider
replacing the battery & if there’s any room for more memory maxing it out.
You never know, it might serve or be a great backup for years.
