I couldn't stand OpenOffice. I found it really slow and hated the repetition of the .org part of the title. Very minor but drove me up the wall insane.

here's what I'd do.
write it in text edit and format it in Open office. just my personal way of working things but it can be done.

Yes, if I recall correctly, there are quite a few who have used Mac Word Processing and VoiceOver to write very high end documents. The specific application escapes me, but we had a couple of folks who were using it to format very complex and professional documents for college papers.

yet there are folk writing term papers with vo and leopard/snow leopard. granted, it's an bit of an struggle but it is being done.

Word processing is likely not good enough for writing term papers so not sure I'd agree that it is ready for a grad student. Of course, it's getting better each time they release an update so if you can hang on to a pc for the stuff that doesn't talk yet then you're good to go.

it does not work with microsoft office, but it does work with iwork and open office and a couple of other mac suites.

As for how functional it is, it's good enough for this former 15 year jaws user to be using it every day now for almost 5 years for all of his formerly jaws tasks.

I am looking at purchasing a Mac, I have been a windows and jaws user for years. Truly, how functional is VO with mac applications and does it work
with Office?

This is a start, but you gotta start somewhere. I will be a grad student
come October.

Hi everybody. I have some very good news to report about SL and Nisus
Writer.

I've downloaded teh NW beta for SL adn I was really happy to see that
it works pretty well with SL. Attributes and font announcements work
fine. And I was really happy to see that page numbers are also working
great too. It will say "page 4", Page 5" as the cursor goes from page
to page.

If you go through the document quickly in page view, you hear page 1,
page 2, etc as you hit the arrow keys. Then I think you can go to
draft on the particular page you want and interact with it. The
interact part is a little tricky because I just haven't figured it out
completely. but I will play with it more later.

Just a preliminary reprot and I am very pleased.

For any of you looking for a medical speller, I've found one that
works, Inductel. They just updated it in May of this year, so it
should be pretty up to date. I also like Typinator which I think will
do fine for storing and quickly typing addresses, although I have not
tried it with SL yet.
