What are the advantages and disadvantes fo coding your own site these days as
compared to using a packaged solution like SquareSpace?

Hello,
Another resource I might suggest is: https://www.thesitewizard.com ;
<https://www.thesitewizard.com/>. This site is huge, has tutorials ranging
from the ABCs of building a website, to making a site search engine
friendly, to monetizing your site, etc. The site also offers free
everything - JavaScripts, PHP scripts, etc. There’s even wizards on there
for generating 1, 2, or 3 column web pages, horizontal and vertical
navigation menus, and php & perl feedback forms, with and without ReCaptcha.
This same webmaster also has two companion sites - HowTO Haven and Free
Country.
I’ve spent a fair amount of time on the main site, and it’s choc-full
of great info, and it’s written in a way that most can understand and relate
to. I’d highly recommend it.
Take Care,
Ron

I am not a wordpress expert, I have it on my server, but I have not
yet set it up, but there are tutorials on their site which should help
you get started.

Okay. I’ve never used WordPress on my MacBook Air, and only very
rudimentary stuff on my iPhone app. I have a domain which can host
WordPress. How do I go about learning to use it, either on my MacBook or
phone? What’s my first step for education?

A lot of the extra wordpress functionality is done by plugins provided
by various companies, there are tonsof those.

I am paying for a domain right now. It has WordPress installed on it. I
didn’t know WP could do shopping carts and guest books and things like
this. I have the app for my phone, but can’t find a Mac OS app in the
App Store.. Thanks, though; I’ll investigate this as well.

You might want to consider a wordpress site, it has all the things you
need, including ecommerce plugins, etc. without learning html
directly. Lots of accessible sites on the internet use this platform.

Subject: [macvoiceover] Need a good HTML tutorial for coding a
business website, shopping cart, etc.
During the slow-down due to the Covid-19 fiasco, I’m trying to put
together a website for the promotion of my wife’s painting, as well
as my creative endeavors—music, writing, etc.
I need a good, up to date tutorial on HTML, PHP and possibly CGI, in
order that I may write an accessible site which allows people to do
such things as sign a guest book, order commissions of Amy’s artwork,
purchase my music or stories, etc. It also should incorporate any
blogs that she or I write, such as WordPress or the like.
Can anyone point me to a good, relatively recent manual or guidebook
where I might refresh my memory of such things?
Thanks. Be well.
