I use the screen curtain, I wonder whether that saves on video processing !

The biggest thing I’ve noticed in all the documentation for the last few new
releases is the amount of horsepower being used to drive visual effects and
functions. I’d love it if there was a way to turn all those off and free up
the processing power to just run core functions. Maybe there is and I just
haven't found it. Crap, I just caught myself thinking about how much simpler
things were under DOS.
Since I started with Mac in 2011 my biggest issues have been with app
functions, mostly around word processing. All but one of the things I lost
switching from Word with Jaws have been introduced, and the one thing isn’t
Voiceover related, Apple just doesn’t think it’s important to do easy
bookfold printing. I guess not enough people at Apple are responsible for
printing a church bulletin.
A few of the things I read before updating talked about how there just isn’t
anything new to do when it comes to operating systems, and we have to get
excited about dark mode and a clever way to sort your messy desktop.
In reading your response I get the feeling I should do a better job of
learning what impact developments will have on the Voiceover experience. I’ve
pretty much had the approach of, hey those are all developments for sighted
users, doesn’t effect me. What are your go-to sources for knowing what
developments are coming specific to Voiceover?
As I bounce back and forth from work emails to personal emails I pretend are
part of work I just noticed something, the naming of attached files is back
in Apple Mail. For the last couple of updates I was only getting a
notification that I had attached a file, not what the file was. Whoever got
Apple to put that back in, thanks.
Cheers,
Ian

Hi Ian,
I am talking about the mac side. glad that You are not having problems so
far but you will. I have been a mac user and a mac fan for over 13 years
but this one has me nervous. I really think that this is a disaster in the
making. Sad.

Hey Keith, which update are you referring to, IOS or Mac? I did a quick
analysis of my Mac apps and didn’t find anything that didn’t have an
updated option. The one I was most nervous about was Audio Book Binder, and
that looks ok. I wasn’t sure about VLC, but it looks to be fine too. All my
other apps are Apple or have updated versions or alternatives.
On the IOS side of things, the few apps I have that I was nervous about
turned out ok. I updated my old IPhone 5S to IOS 12 because something was
broken with IBooks and my son wanted to use it as an audio book player,
and maybe play a couple of his games. All the stuff I need to do is on my
IPhone 8, and the apps I want to keep on the 5S all have updates for IOS
12, or I don't care if they don’t work on the old phone. So it was a
calculated decision. Since the update the Books app is good to go with his
audio books, and I can use the new Screen Time function to find out if he’s
sneaking any unauthorized game play in.

Ian,
I think that you will be sorry that you have done that. For one thing it
looks like you can kiss your 32 bit apps good-by. It is just my opinion
but I think that Voiceover users will suffer because of this one.
IMHO.

I decided to go ahead and update, I read up on the security flaw, and the
issue seemed pretty specific and avoidable if you stuck to the core apps
Apple provides. Besides, the NSA has all our contact information
anyways…I’m only joking, please don’t send the helicopters to my house
again.
