I discovered this weekend that, using keyremap4macbook, I can turn the vokeys combination into one key. Keyremap4macbook actually works on other Macs and on both internal and external (both usb and bluetooth) keyboards. By changing around the fn key and ctrl-option in this program, I can use just what used to be the fn key as vokeys. There are a few caveats to this. 1. There are some situations where the changed fn key still will operate as an fn key; for instance, in raising my volume. You just have to experiment to figure out what does or doesn't work with your keyboard. 2. When using control-option as fn, it depends on which order you press control and option. One way it still functions as control-option i.e., vokeys and the other way it functions as fn. 3. On some keyboards (my little Iogear for example) it appears that you can't program the fn key to be something else. Still, having learned where I can and can't do this, I find it helpful. You can also choose which kinds of keyboards to be changed so that, for instance, if you want your internal keyboard changed but not your bluetooth one, you can do that. Also, control and option still work separately as expected. Also, on my Iogear bluetooth keyboard, where I can't change fn but am irritated because there's no way to do control and option on the right hand side, I found an option that lets me change the return key so that it is return when pressed alone but is control when pressed with other keys. In fact, with the Iogear, I did several changes. I swapped left option and left control, turned right option into right command, , turned the pc application key to left option (which doesn't usually matter unless you are using keyboard commander), and then turned return into control but keeping some return functionality as described above. I'm not meaning to start a key remapping discussion per se, but thought some might like experimenting especially with turning vokeys into one key. -- Cheryl May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.
