if you open a message, open the text file and copy it to the clipboard, you can paste it into the end of the message provided you are in an edit area such as reply or forward.

as to the text field not speaking, it works fine for me but I have heard of this happening. try interacting with the field and see if that helps.

David,
Yes I assumed I could edit the header in save as" but once I enter the text field, it doesn't let me add anything. Should VO be off I assume? My third question really is how can I add an attachment as a text file to the end of the message I'm saving--or do I have to save it separately?
Thanks again for all your help.

anyone know why my save command in mail is dimmed?

Judy;
in the view menu go to columns and press enter on attachment and that column will report its status.

use save as and you can edit the file name.

I don't understand your third question.

I have a couple of mail attachment questions.
First, how do I get my messages table to show me if a message has an attachment?

I download my husband's email to his thumb drive, saving each message as a .txt file. Is there a way to "edit" a subject line to change its name before saving it?

If a message has a .doc attachment, can I attach .doc files automatically to the end of the .txt message?
Hope this is clear.
Thanks,
Judy
