About the only thing the Mac won't do at all accessibly is music editing. I mean professional quality midi and audio editing. I know Slow is working on getting ProTools accessible, but this is a huge job. This kind of software is complex, and consequently very visually ritch UIs have been built to access them. Building in access after the fact is difficult. Windows software is, with only one exception, not accessible in this area either. The only exception is cakewalk's Sonar, which is accessible with Window-eyes (the .set files are free I believe, but can't remember where), and two different Jaws solutions have been developed (one free and the other one must pay for). These solutions are good, but are far from perfect. I'd say VoiceOver could do better in a few key areas, namely web browsing and spreadsheet. However, if iTunes accessibility is anything to go by, Apple seems like they are well underway, and no doubt Lepoard will bring more exciting changes. Because I browse the web a lot, and because mail just isn't as quick and easy as Outlook Express with Jaws (in my humble opinion), I don't use it daily. I am going to try out the virtual machine approach though, and if I ever get an extra couple thousand, I'll get an intel mac and run windows on it when I need to do music stuff. I really think it's not a matter of putting windows against the mac but looking at what you want to do and what your situation is along with how much you can spend and then make an appropriate choice. In answer to your question for me yes! I would buy a mac because so far almost everything that I like and need to do can be done here. What is missing is a good spreadsheet program and full access to a word processor such as being able to read and generate tables. I own a mac as my personal laptop and find that each day I do more and more with it. The mac is a robust stable machine and voiceover is growing in to an excellent screen reader. Some of the tasks I perform on the mac are e-mail, internet, paying bills over the net, recording sermons for church and uploading them, watching dvds, using IM client's such as skype and fire, playing music through itunes, and the list goes on. ----- Original Message ----- From: "MaryLee Perkins" <marylee925@xxxxxxx> To: <macvoiceover@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, July 26, 2007 12:00 AM Subject: [macvoiceover] Mac vs Windows question > My students are all so keyed into Windows that they won't consider a Mac. > I have explained that they could own a new Mac for far less than the JAWS > screen reader program will cost, but no body is listening.
