You can also use screen curtain to shield your eyes.  It doesn't change the 
drain on the battery but it's easy to toggle on and off.

AS for turning off the backlight on thekeyboard, the best you can do is 
disable the setting for activate backlite in low lighting.

Can the sighted folks still see it if I turn it down? I want to turn it down
a bit as the brightness can sometimes actually bother my eyes...any idea how
to turn off back-lighting on the keyboard? Not only does that drain, it's
useless for me and it warms up the keys. lol
