The backup is good practice, but why not just leave everything where it is and just delete what doesn't run any more?

I'd also highly recommend backing up the machine's Macintosh Hd drive, using a
program like the (free) Super Duper. After all, the upgrade will require you to
restart, go through the installation and then boot into your new system. And,
you know, there can always be errors in such a process. For me, I know I'm
gonna do it the hardcore way. My route will be to backup the whole system and
then save important stuff separately. Afterwards, I'm gonna format my system
drive, put on Lion and put back all the old content that I requere (e.g.
documents, email messages, etc). Yes, this means I'm going to have to go
through all the important settings and re-adjust everything I need. But, you
know... That's the best way of running into any new changes and features, and
it frees the system from any OS 10.6 holdovers that are no longer required.
