Thanks, that has tidied that up, now I don't understand how I missed that in 
the table menu, I'm sure I looked !
But activating the menu may haave produced more options.

Yup. In the column you want to delete, activate the context menu with VO shift 
M, and there are options to delete row or delete column. If you have 
inadevertently added multiple columns, select cells from each column with shift 
arrows, and the option wil switch to delete columns. Same goes for rows, you 
don’t need to select the whole row, just a cell from each row. 

The command z panic option is there for when you accidentally delete a column 
you didn’t mean to. notice I said when, not if. It seems to be inevitable due 
to inattentiveness on my part.
