The latest update might fix the pauses problem for you. When I tried the 1.3 voices in Leopard, there were really long pauses for me, too, at least with Heather. With version 2 on SL, they seemed to disappear, or at least they did with the speed set to be pretty fast. I still had the pronunciation troubles, though.

Voices are very much a matter of opinion/personal preference. I like the Infovox voices much better than I like Alex and I certainly don't consider them to be a novelty. but that's why there are so many choices--we all have different likes and dislikes.
