The latest update might fix the pauses problem for you. When I tried the 1.3 voices in Leopard, there were really long pauses for me, too, at least with Heather. With version 2 on SL, they seemed to disappear, or at least they did with the speed set to be pretty fast. I still had the pronunciation troubles, though.
