So, is there a way to tell what you have installed, or do you just
have to look in your applications folder or what? Can you keep
everything in your user account when you do a clean install?

Two more things:
1. I wonder if cocktail is doing anything over time that, while great for
nonvoiceover users, isn't so great for voiceover users. I don't know how much
you have it automating its work but that could be something to look at.
Personally, I find no need for such a program on my Mac but that's just my
own style of doing things. I know that some people find it very helpful.
Secondly, If one keeps upgrading and upgrading the same system, I am a
believer in deciding at some point to do what some people think of as "the
dreaded" clean install: installing your system from scratch and then adding
in your own items and applications, preferably not in a wholesale migration
assistant move. I don't mean this has to be done with every major upgrade,
though that isn't a terrible idea, but if you've run two or three major
systems just by the standard upgrade and are having problems, it is worth
considering. One way to find out if this would help would be to do a clean
install on an external drive and just add in your minimum requirements and
run it for a while to see if the performance is better, keeping in mind of
course that your external drive installation may be slower in some ways than
your internal drive should be. If you see a significant difference over time,
you might decide to bite the bullet, back up everything, and do the same on
your interna!
The tips that CJ posted do help in my experience.

Suzanne,
I was experiencing some of the same issues, with my upgrade to Sierra. One
of the problems that occurs, when you upgrade to a new OS, is that the new
software is indexing everything―& I mean everything―on your HD for
Spotlight purposes. That takes several days, depending on the amount of
data on your drive.
Secondly, & more importantly for VoiceOver users, are the “Heavy Effects”
on the display. Search this list for the subject “lost Alex compact” &
you’ll find some messages between Cheryl & myself. There’s a link in one
of my MSG’s about a web article that details disabling these “Heavy
Effects” in the Accessibility/display & Dock areas of the Settings program.
Once I made these 5 changes, My Mac was back, even under Sierra. If you
can’t find the article, let me know & I’ll try & find the link. Hang in
there, you can resolve the issue.
Hope this helps,
CJ

Hi Listers,
Despite using Cocktail in the demo version, my computer is acting
extremely sluggish, and VoiceOver is often not working. Had a similar
occurrence a couple of months ago. Took it to the Apple Store, they ran a
diagnostic,,,,, reinstalled the OS, and it was okay but not great.
I upgraded to Siera, with no chnge.
Then, a bout two weeks ago, I installed Cocktail and it acted better
than it had been for quite some time. Then, it started actings sluggish
again, and today, VoiceOver has been almost non-existent. It will work
for a few syllables, then stop. It will act like it wants to say
something but can’t. Even if I do a cold reboot, VoiceOver does not come
back immediately.
Very strange, indeed!
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should have the Geniuses
look for?
Thanks so much! Sorry if this is more of a diagnostic question than a
strictly VoiceOver related one.
I am in business for myself, annd depend on my computer for work. I
really want this computer to last at least until spring.
I can use my iPhone for many things, but I ned access to soe files that
are on the computer.
Have a blessed weekend!
