I have had no problems with voiceover under El Capitan, but when I
tried to upgrade to Sierra, vo kept freezing up and not working and
sometimes t would not let me boot, kept saying something like invagent
has no windows. I spent a long time on the phone with Apple, giving
logs, diagnostics, etc. but I had to go back. But make sure you have
plenty of ram, 8 or 16g depending on your usage and possibly an ssd
drive if you can. That should bring your older Mac to life, sort of.
Mine is from mid 2010 and maybe it just won't do Sierra.

Hi Suzanne,
I'm not using Sierra, but I have been having similar problems for a couple
months. Voiceover is extremely sluggish and sometimes does not work at all.
It was suggested to me on this list that I clear out some of the login items
I think that is what it's called. I did that but it only worked for a short
time. Now my voiceover is back to being sluggish and nonresponsive. I'm not
sure what the problem is. I know my Mac is older (2009) so I'm not sure if
that has anything to do with it or not.

Hi Listers,
Despite using Cocktail in the demo version, my computer is acting extremely
sluggish, and VoiceOver is often not working. Had a similar occurrence a
couple of months ago. Took it to the Apple Store, they ran a
diagnostic,,,,, reinstalled the OS, and it was okay but not great.
I upgraded to Siera, with no chnge.
Then, a bout two weeks ago, I installed Cocktail and it acted better
than it had been for quite some time. Then, it started actings sluggish
again, and today, VoiceOver has been almost non-existent. It will work for
a few syllables, then stop. It will act like it wants to say something but
can’t. Even if I do a cold reboot, VoiceOver does not come back
immediately.
Very strange, indeed!
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should have the Geniuses
look for?
Thanks so much! Sorry if this is more of a diagnostic question than a
strictly VoiceOver related one.
I am in business for myself, annd depend on my computer for work. I really
want this computer to last at least until spring.
I can use my iPhone for many things, but I ned access to soe files that are
on the computer.
Have a blessed weekend!
