Hi Donna, go into mail preferences with command-comma, interact with the tool bar, hit VO-space on accounts, stop interacting with the toolbar, assuming you only have one account, you'll want to go to the advanced tab, just VO right arrow until you hear advanced tab, and VO space on that to select that tab, and there are settings there for keeping messages on the server, and how long you want to keep them on the server.
