Hi Ian,
I’ve had good success using Google Docs in Windows with either Jaws or NVDA.
I’ve had mixed results on my iMac running El Capitan and Google Chrome. After
seeing your email message, I tried Google Docs on my iMac, this time with
Safari instead of Chrome. The results are quite good. The main thing you need
to do when you first open Google Docs is to turn on screen reader support. On
the Mac you do this by pressing Command + Option + Z. You only need to do this
once. After that, unless you turn if off, screen reader support stays enabled,
no matter where you access Google Docs from. I’ve worked on a Google Doc that I
shared with someone, and when the other person was in the document editing it,
Jaws would say “So and So is editing paragraph 3”, so it really does work quite
well. This was in Windows, but I’m sure the feedback would be there on the Mac
as well. Tonight I even noticed that I was able to navigate in a Google Doc by
heading. The keystroke is different mind you… to go to the next heading you
press Command + Control + N, immediately followed by Command + Control + H. To
go to the previous heading you press Command + Control + P, immediately
followed by Command + Control + H.
Here is a link with some tips for using Google Docs with a screen reader. It
has a link to information about turning on screen reader support. On the page
about screen reader support, there is also steps for enabling Braille support.
In Windows, I had a lot of trouble with Jaws being extremely sluggish in Google
Docs. Someone told me to turn on Braille support, and once I did this, the
sluggishness was gone. Not sure if it makes a difference on the Mac.

Good luck, and let me know if you have any further questions.

Hello list, I dont’ thik I’ve checked in on this lately, is anyone
successfully using the Google Docs word processor? If yup, any tips and
tricks? I’m on a board that really wants to use it, I’m hoping there is a way
to keep up.
Thanks,
Ian
