Leana,
I went through that a few years ago, with a 2008 15-inch Mac Book Pro. I
replaced the battery, with a generic off eBay. It worked, but a few years
later, it had swollen & actually effected the Mac’s overall performance. I’m
in Tucson AZ, so I sent it to a place near Phoenix that specializes in
refurbishing Macs. Well, $100 later, it was back, cleaned inside & out, new
approved battery installed, & it’s worked for my daughter ever since. Anyway,
I wouldn’t run a Mac with a dead or dying battery, after that experience.
Also, I wouldn’t buy one of the 2ND party efforts off eBay. If you’re
interested in the Apple Exchange’s info, let me know & I’ll forward it to you.
Good luck,
CJ

I would like to ask you your opinion about this. My six-year-old MacBook Pro
has alerted me that the battery needs to be replaced. It is no longer
charging. So it is confined to my desk for now. Should I replace the battery?
Or should I wait and just invest in a new Mac in the next year or two? At
this time I cannot afford any of the new MacBook pros. The MacBook Air is a
possibility or something from the refurbished store. I use the I pad for
checking my email daily listening to podcast and some web surfing. It has
taken a load off my old computer. But I do use the computer about once a week
or so for three or four hours at a time. Hopefully this type of usage will
prolong its life.
Any thoughts?
Lena
