this is where vo lock comes in handy, press vo-semi colon, tap d if you must and then press semi colon.

I personally find the numpad commander to be cumbersome but then I used a mac for years with vo without it.

Well, that is a matter of opinion. I prefer my keyboard with the numeric keypad, as you can use it to assign VoiceOver commands to it. It simplifies keystrokes and has made use even easier for me.
