I would partition the drive initially with the backup partition having at least
the equivalent capacity as your main drive.
Then the remaining space can be used for additional storage of non-crucial
data, i.e. crucial data is now on your main drive plus the backup partition on
the usb drive.
I don't have Time Machine doing continuous backup as I find this interferes
with processor space as I am working, I backup when I feel it is necessary,
particularly befor any OS upgrade.
In the Time Machine preferences you can specify what folders you want backed up.
