I think it's one of those things that some people just don't get. Only
sometimes, if you keep trying, it "clicks" and then you wonder why you couldn't
do it. Will keep these instructions for when I'm in the mood to try again :-)

The name of Jesus is not only light but also food;
it is also oil, without which all food of the
soul is dry;
it is salt, without whose seasoning whatever is set before us is insipid;
finally, it is honey in the mouth,
melody in the ear,
rejoicing in the heart,
and at the same time medicine.
Every discourse in which his name is not spoken is without savor.
(Bernard as quoted in Calvin's Institutes)

Turn the rotor to characters, words, or lines. Place VO where you wish to
start the select.
Start with your finger and thumb together a bit above the display. As you
start slowly separating the fingers, touch the display. Lift the fingers at
the same time after the fingers have expanded enough. The selection can
continue so long as the fingers are always moving slowly each time the
expansion starts. If the fingers remain together on the display for too long,
they will be detected as one finger and the selection will be cancelled.
When changing the rotor during the selection process, be precise about the
rotor twist. If fingers are too close together, they will be detected as one
finger and the selection will be cancelled.

The one I can’t get to work is the pinch gesture. I finally got the rotor
down, but I can’t pinch to select words or characters to save my life. Gods
