I did a clean install of El Capitan a couple of days ago and couldn’t hear my
mail sounds. I know this has been thoroughly discussed so maybe this is
unneeded but I thought I would mention it. Since all of my alert sounds were
pretty quiet and I couldn’t hear mail sounds, I went into System Preferences >
Sounds. First I checked my alerts volume but it said 100%. But alert sounds
appear to be relative to output volume; in other words, if your output volume
is 20% and your alert volume at 100%, your alert volume will not really be 100%
but will just be 100% of that output volume. So I increased my output volume.
Then I used cmd-option-ctrl right arrow to go to my voiceover volume and
decreased that since it was way too loud for me once I increased my system
volume. Upon doing that, all of my alerts, including mail sounds, can be
clearly heard. I know that some people’s sounds really did disappear but you
might want to check this before assuming your sounds have disappeared.
Another thing to be aware of if you have custom sounds you have added is that
they may need to be added again. This will of course definitely be true if you
did a clean install. Even if you did a clean install and then used Migration
Assistant or did a straightforward upgrade, this is worth checking as it seems
to me that Mac OS X has had a history of moving sounds around. It will be a
dead giveaway if you check your available mail sounds and find your custom ones
missing.
