In case you want an alternative to Adium or Ichat, the AIM client for Mac OS10 seems VO accessible. I'd recommend parking the VO cursor in the HTML content frame when in a chat session, because in my opinion, the screen is messily laid out, with all the buttons and so on below the message box and above the typing window. But it does work, and it has the old AIM traditional sounds... Isn't VO cool!?
