Thanks John,
I had tried deleting the preference file but got an error so had to put it
back. I still got the error so ran permission repair and ran text edit again.
I got lucky and was able to close the file and say don't save and now, all is
well.

same window. You need to try to delete the Text Edit preference file in your
user library or find the Text Edit entry in the Saved Application State folder
of your user library and delete that file.
