In mail, there are two views, one is classic layout. ths is unchecked by
default. I prefer this and most folk I know prefer it as well but it's
easily switched if you want to start with the default vew. you can also
choose to view messages in conversations or threads as they are called by
some mail programs. You cn aso set the sort order of messages and you can
also choose the columns to be displayed so mail is highly customizable.

Thank you for this information. So in the mail program I would leave it as
is? Can you explain why you have to interact with everything and then get
out of it. Is there a way to just go to mail, for instance without doing a
keystroke to interact and then another when you finish? Barbara

Not really, the only different views I know of are in the finder and what
you do here has a lot to do with personal preference. for instance, in the
finder, you can set your view to icon, list or column. I like column view
because you can download through a list of items and if there isa folder in
the list, you can right arrow to expand it and left arrow to collapse it.
icon view is good because it puts the items in neat little rows and you can
just tab through them or press the first one or two letters of an item's
name and jump to it. Pressing command-o will open the item and that
includes folders. List view is good because it gives you all the info on an
item as you down arrow through them and it also allows you to expand and
collapse folders.

Do I need to put things in different views to make reading easier and if so,
how is this done? Barbara

it's a good starting point but there is quite a bit to add to it.

for instance, you can use regular arrows and tab and space in dialogues but
you don't get all the text if you do it. once you are familiar with the
dialogs though, you can use regular keys quite effectively. Both guides
focus on vo because that is what they are designed for but I only use vo
commands when I need to read something that is not in the tab order or when
I am working with web pages.

The similarity between windows and the mac are striking in this.

I'm anxious to get to that point. I did find the getting started in the
menu and think it is quite comprehensive but I'm new so not really sure of
that yet. Barbara

yes, the quickstart is right there but it does not provide the depth that
the getting started guide does so when you finish with the quickstart,
you'll want to use the getting started guide and of course this list to fill
in where the quickstart leaves off.

Happy macking, I've been doing it for almost 7 years now.

This document is not the best way to get started. I'd just learn the mac
and voiceover with the voiceover quickstart and the voiceover getting
started guide on the apple support site
http://www.apple.com/accessibility/voiceover/downloads.html
