So, what I'd like to do, is, first of all, I need to probably on my interface, I'm thinking, probably back off my gain just a bit. Actually, quite a bit. I'm saying run it so I'm peeking around maybe instead of -12DB, maybe go to -24DB. This way, we've basically cut the level in half. Then seeing we know -12DB is apparently the clipping point, I'd like to take a compressor, and add a very fast attack with a very slow release. I'd say maybe just a few milliseconds on the attack, and maybe a second or so on the release. Basically, I'm looking for somewhere in the neighborhood of a 2/1 ratio. Basically, what I'm trying to do is have Garage band's compressor boost my level. In other words, record the vocals very quiet then let the compressor boost them back up to an acceptible level, rather than me trying to drive the DAW really hot, if that makes any sense. I'm sure especially to people like Sarah, it will. Cause obviously you always always always! wanna run some compression on vocals as it helps with levelling problems like this. So, I want to set it where basically the compressor knows that -12DB is too high. Then also, using a compressor, I'd like to have it clamp down! a bit on the music. This way what we're essentially doing is using two compressors. One to bring the vocal up and boost the signal, then another to roll off the backing karaoke track a ways.
I know there are different presets with the compressor effect built into GB, but is this something that is fairly easy to set manually to the way I'm describing? I'm sorry, but I do not do preconfigured presets. I've found that there aren't any good ones. Just bottom line. They all in my opinion only, sound like crap. I prefer starting from scratch and building my own customized setup.
So, does anyone have any suggestions how I can cut this internal buss clipping down? I just know! I can't say for sure, but I almost can bet my money on that is what is happening.
