Allora inanzitutto grazie x la risposta che mi ha aiutato a risolvere il
problema.
Ricapitolando:
Durante l'installazione all'inizio NON avevo caricato come modulo nel kernel
i drivers per la scheda video Radeon quindi anche scegliendo ATI come server
X non partiva.
