I think the idea of audio-only channels is interesting. When I started my
channel I didn't have a lot of programming at first, so I used a low-cost radio
automation program and played a few hour-long blocks of bluegrass music. This
radio-type program was well received, particularly since we added in CDs from
local musicians.
50's music would be cool, as it's not played that much on the radio now.
Really, any genre that is under-served might work - I'm a big fan of the "Rat
Pack" - Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and those guys, so that would be nice, jazz
and big band might work, too. As Rick says, there are several free radio
automation systems out there. The one I used was donation-ware
(www.mixtime.com) and ran rock solid for a few years on a cheap computer. I do
weather forecasts for a school-run FM station nearby and they use Radiodj,
(www.radiodj.ro <http://www.radiodj.ro/>).
And audio-only channels might tie in to what Keith was saying about ethnic
communities. So, say you have a Vietnamese or Chinese community in your
market; they probably want to hear music, news and information in your native
language. Many of these communities have businesses that are owned and cater
specifically to that community. While they might not advertise on a general
radio / TV station, they'd be more likely to do so on an ethnic station.
The trick would be finding the right person in that community who has an
interest and is technically savvy. Maybe the idea would be to throw an offer
out there that, hey, as a TV station owner, I'll make this audio-only channel
available, and I'll give you a chance to build it up and make it a viable
business by broadcasting it free for a year or so. After that, I'll charge a
lease rate (something like Rick is suggesting). Audio channels don't take up
that much bandwidth so (if you have the technical capability) what's to lose?
While there's not a huge amount of ethnic variety in my area (Southern
Appalachia) I have a number of friends at an area Mexican restaurant and I can
tell you that the young Hispanics working there are always trying to dream up
business ideas. They would love such an opportunity.

The quick way to add audio-only sub channels is to add a SAP channel to your
video channels. Then, you can use a D2Mux to remap the SAP channels as their
own sub channel. To add in SAP channels, I use Leitch 475/575s that I buy
off of eBay for cheap.
Using your formula of $44 per million, then an audio sub channel on KQTA-LD
is $44/million people * 6 million people = $264. I think your formula is a
bit low. Nevertheless, a few hundred extra dollars a month is nice.

Then comes the formula of what to charge. Years ago I started with a
formula of $1,000 per million per channel based on 8 channels. That comes to
2.25 MBits per channel, so $444 per MBits per million. You can do audio only
down to .1 MBits so now you are at $44 per month per million people. The only
down side is the audio encoder is going to take a while to pay for.

On the topic of radio synergies with LPTV, I wonder who is also making money
on renting out audio-only sub-channels. I had someone ask me about renting
one yesterday. Also, my non-profit ministry's new 1/3rd channel share LPTV
on Sutro Tower in San Francisco started this month renting an audio-only
sub-channel to K-Love. We are their pilot test case for renting audio-only
sub channels on TV stations! Knowing that K-Love will be making future
decisions on renting audio-only sub-channels on TV stations makes me want to
monitor it more closely to ensure that it is always sounding good. K-Love
will be adding KQTA-LD 15.7 to their list of stations on their website.

So all of these IP feeds are really not generating money for the local
LPTV station. So why hassle with it? Not being a Scrooge, just being honest.
The real money maker is local, local, local. It sounds to me the local
content that repeats is King. 2nd would probably be You Tube stuff because it
is new and the curious will watch. I like the idea of working with local
radio. We have a talk radio station in Nashville I would love to watch and I
know they have cameras in their studios, though these days, I think they are
all working out of their house.

Although we are still 'green' in the biz, and won't officially launch our
stations until 2021 (mostly due to pandemic and to coincide with our launch
on Spectrum) we did pick up a nice buy doing the 'santa tracker' on
Christmas eve. This is an oldie but goodie and works well on radio & tv. We
are working with the local parks and rec to provide on St Nicks cords and
track his travels on Christmas eve, and picked up a sponsor for it too.
Other plans for our 2021... introducing a live daily mid day show called
"LIVE on 9"... Community guests, human interest, puppies to adopt etc. Non
scripted laid back and light fair & content. I think coverage of the local
fairs and festivals are sellable too.
We are lucky to be able to use our radio staff to cross the hall and
contribute to content. We are one of few local broadcasters that has a staff
and we do cover local news well. We are going to do a 30 min local newscast
at 5:30 Mon-Fri. Maybe replay it at 11:30 or midnight. We are already doing
a radio/streaming hybrid of this daily at 3pm... We are just going to polish
it up, with teleprompter, earpiece and make it more TV formatted.
Seasonal things we know garnish interest will be our holiday parade coverage,
local election coverage, and the "Santa Hotline' show we want to roll Dec
2021. I honestly think the mice will quit playing and watch in 10 counties
when this show is on! It is an original concept and I can wait for next year
to roll around to get it going.
We also are offering some dirt cheap packages for folks to run ads during
reg, network programming... .Just ROS.. .make the ad, run it a lot on the
various channels for x amount per month. Not really keeping track of a
'rate' for this.
Our experience is the locally produced stuff always is sellable... .BUT that
cost money to create content and execute.. So there is a large difference in
our regular ROS rates during network and say, an ad on 'the news'...or midday
show, or local sports. This is proprietary content that brings the local
eyeballs in and commands a much better rate.
If any of you can make a partnership with a local radio station, I encourage
you to do so. Our radio stations are marketing machines for the LPTV...
everything from promos for the networks shows, to sharing news resources,
audio for community news etc. It's a synergetic relationship that works
incredibly.
I really enjoy this forum and getting to share these ideas and story's with
one another.
