I attended the seminar at KERA, Dallas put on by Mswdtv.com with Greg
Sgrignoli, one of the holders of several DTV patents and the S in the
company name. One thing found in hundreds of DTV reception issues was:
Place the antenna as far from the TV as far as possible in the direction
the towers if possible.

DTVs are computers with a tuner....computers emit quite a bit of RF noise,
especially plasmas. Having an antenna close to the TV is a bad thing with
8VSB as the emitted noise interferes with reception. When I talked with
Greg at a break, I told him DTV is data transmission with no return ack
path as I dealt with in telecom. He looked at me and said "you got it.
Which group do you work with?" I told him at the time I was in radio, but
helped LPTV stations and one former boss had built KFDM and I learned a lot
from Harold. His jaw dropped and said "you'd be surprised how many seasoned
analog guys don't get it...I think you missed your calling!"

No, not really....once it's data, it's easy to think about.  Greg then
asked me if I wanted to consult for his group in my area...sure!! Whats the
pay? LoL 😆
Common sense, using real antennas properly placed plus a good low noise
preamp if needed, is best for any DTV reception, LP/LD even more so.  Stay
away from noise sources, especially computers, etc.
Proper planning...location, location, location.

Chris
