Thanks Kelly,
The main reason I was asking about ad insertion is that for a long while I've
had this idea in the back of my head about how to make insertion on multiple
channels more efficient. Your station has a very typical setup...3 networks
and 3 sets of insertion units. But what if there was a way to do 3 networks
with only one inserter? Or maybe 8 networks with 3 or 4 players?
So the basic idea would be to have a bank of players which could be used to
insert on any channel. All networks would be run into a Black Magic Design
Smart Videohub CleanSwitch 12x12 router. This would allow for 8 networks and
up to 4 players. DTMF circuits would be attached to a logic processor (micro
computer, Raspberry Pi unit(s) ??) and when a tone is received would assign an
available player for insertion. The logic processor would queue an appropriate
playlist and issue a play command while sending a route command to the router,
pausing for the avail time and routing back to the network feed.
This is just a rough concept but I think this would be possible to achieve.
The programming is above my pay grade, but nowadays it's possible to find
freelance programmers to do this.
Anyways, just an idea I've had rolling around in my empty head like a marble!!
Got too much on my plate to even start to study hard on this right now! Let me
know if you folks have any suggestions or ideas.

We went through that education here! Masterplay is working very good for us
here with network dtmf tones. We had to 'beef up" the tones with some
addional equipment to make them fire reliably.
We do local insertion on 3 channels. We use ONE log. So advertisers get the
same schedule on all three of the stations we do local insertion on.
We sell ROS packages. 5 :30s per day and 1 overnight for a flat monthly fee.
(x 3 stations is 18 per day!)
We sell higher rates on our local news or locally originated programming
(which always is an easy sell)

I'm curious, what do most of you use equipment-wise for ad insertion on
national networks? MasterPlay or other equipment? Is there any equipment
out there that can handle multiple channels of insertion?
And do most of you sell Run of Schedule (RoS) or scheduled spots? Do
advertisers want daypart scheduling?
Do networks still use DTMF tones to trigger avails or is there some other
method new receivers use? Are you using SDI for your setups?
Thanks for any insight. It's been a long time since I dealt with ad
insertion. I have a few ideas in my head for a possible future development
project...
