Let’s take up the debate about the 3 hour schedule. When Live PD was on, I
would watch it faithfully. I would start to get bored toward the end of the 3
hours but some nights I would watch the replay which occurred right after which
was a feat for a guy my age. Then it hit me one day. Very, very few people will
watch a single channel for more than 3 hours. The only time is normally during
a serious news event and even that is changing almost every minute. Even people
who watch videos do not do it more than 3 hours.
So why not create a 3 hour block and repeat it. Then, no matter when you
tune in, you can watch the whole thing in three hours and either go do
something else or move to another channel. By doing that you can pick the best
of the best and specialize your channel. So you can have a classic comedy,
classic detective, classic, adventure, etc. With movies I would do a 6 hour
block.
It would be a programmers dream. Pick the best shows and either send them
way ahead or the day before in an Mpeg4 encoding. Quality would be superior to
tight compression satellite or internet and no digitizing. The station has to
have a way to play commercials and the cost of a server is less than a
satellite receiver and no dish or mega high speed internet required. You could
do it with a T1 1.5 Mbit line. You acting like a DVR for your viewers. And
there is a good chance at least once a day everyone in your community is going
to watch.
So what is the down side in doing this?
