Diane –
David Wagner’s field guide notes that the filaments of Nematocampa are
eversible; they are extended when the caterpillar is alarmed by infusion of
hemolymph (= insect blood). This is not the case with the other genus you have
below. You can also see the bump atop your specimen where that second filament
is.
