Charlie Lyon and I went to Tensas River NWR Wednesday to scout it and to find
butterflies. The refuge is in both Madison and Tensas Parishes in northeastern
Louisiana. During the four hours we were there, we were only able to survey
part of the area in Tensas Parish. The habitat in this area is mainly
bottomland hardwood forest. However there are some very large soybean fields
which attract bears at dusk and dawn. The bears like to eat the beans. We saw
a total of 21 species, but nothing unusual. The complete list is below.
