Sunday morning, I left rainy Lafayette, heading north looking for the sun and some butterflies. The sun started breaking through by Forest Hill so I got off I-49 and checked a NF road that I sometimes visit. Some flowers were in bloom and the walking was easy among good butterfly activity. I had only seen Hoary Edge once before so finding a few of them giving good looks was a treat. Duskywings and cloudywings were in good numbers and I spent a lot of time trying for good photos. Some were obvious, but many were hard to separate into species, so I like photos to study later. My duskywings all proved to be Horace's, but the cloudywings were a mixed bag. There were a bunch of obvious Northern, but also a bunch of Southern/Confusing types that needed close study. A few were easy to call Southern, and a couple I feel are good for Confusing, but 6 or 7 were hard for me to call. I have photos of some of these S/C types up for viewing if any want to give them a look. Jeff Trahan sent me an interesting article by Jeffery Glassberg, (American Butterflies, Summer 2013), on telling cloudywings apart. I labeled a few,, but could certainly be wrong, and several I left undecided. Feel free to look and give opinions. http://www.pbase.com/pattonpix/cloudywings Kisatchie NF, July 20, 2014, Near Forest Hill, LA Rapides Parish Little Yellow - 32 Whirlabouts - 8 Horace's DW - 11 Norther Cloudywing - 19 Southern Cloudywing - 5 Confusing Cloudywing - 3 S/C Cloudywing - 8 Goatweed Leafwing - 1 Red-spotted Purple - 5 Spicebush ST - 6 Pipevine ST - 3 Pearl Crescent - 11 Carolina Satyr - 8 Hoary Edge - 6 Cloudless Sulphur - 2 Little Glassy-wing - 1 Gray HS - 3 Cloudy Skipper - 1 Gem Satyr - 1 Dave Patton Lafayette
