We read from the media that there's a current debate in the UK -- instigated
by the Greens if you mustn't -- on what to eat now that we know what part
industrial cows play in global warming. When the Greens proposed a tax on
meat sheep farmers asked how come they should be on the receiving end of such
a tax when their mutton were not respinsible for greenhouse gases; besides
the rolling hils of England and surrounds might well suffer were such a tax
to be levied, we understand.
Not sure about chickens in this regard -- you may ask, David. However
Morrissey might have a thing or two to say about your fowls' industrial
cousins.
Our animals are part of a recycling system. Since we often have people to
dinner there are often leftovers, which are eaten by us for as long as seems
wise or safe, and then offered to the dog, the cats, the chickens. Our
chickens get a small amount of commercial food and roam the yard eating
whatever they uncover. I don’t think they play a significant role in global
warming but it might be a good idea to ask them; possibly they have some kind
of mining operation or underground smelting plant that I’ve not yet discovered?
I now have a vision in my head of one of those scenes of woe and industry
from, “Lord of the Rings.”
Different subject: I was asked yesterday if I could distinguish among
sarcastic, sardonic and facetious. The big surprise from the O.E.D. is that
facetious was, for much of the history of English, a term of approval. I
suggested a Venn Diagram with lots of overlap, but it’s hard to define those
meanings that each word has to itself. See what you come up with.
