Carol - Why do you consider JR "meagerly qualified?" He may be evasive, hardto pin down on substantive issues, too conservative, questionable about civil rights, women's rights, etc.. But as an eminently qualified lawyer, perhaps the most experienced lawyer regarding the SC -- given his 39 times in front of the Supreme Court -- in the country today, he hardly seems "meagerly qualified." I only hope he's a Souter in disguise. He's shown he knows how to make the case for both liberal and conservative clients. He's got the intellectual firepower, experience, empathy (at least intellectual empathy). Certainly he's worrisome because he's kept his real viewpoints hidden from us, except what we've been able to glean from his writings. Using "meager" to describe him throws me.
