I think that Ursula gets it just right. Even if one reads novels and
histories which raise great moral issues, one has to feel the grip of
them oneself: to have one's literature professor treat the moral depth
of a work as if it were one more trope to be noted in the margin seems
like one more downward path to wisdom.
