students started to send me emails with the salutation, 'Hi
Bob.'* Now they all do it.

You let them get away with it. Case closed.
The point is that I'm not sure if things have changed grammar-wise so
that this new form is correct; so I can't admonish them until I hear
from the MLA or Webster or Heidegger: whoever knows.
