Thank you, Judy. As you well know, I'm not a scholar of anything. I have only my prejudices to go by. I call them my Mama's teachings. I'm convinced that even for moral philosophers their own personal morality is what Mama taught them -- gut-wise at least -- or the reverse in rejection of her. Given the chance, all men are honest and decent and hard-working and even loving -- provided their mothers raised them to be that way. But cheat them, they'll cheat back. As well they should for that's how their mothers taught them. Except the saints among us. There are the saints among us, the Jesuses and the Gandhis and the Martin Luther Kings, all those anonymous souls who give their lives to NGO's fighting starvation or the Doctors Without Borders people struggling anonymosly to save human lives -- people who transcend their own histories to call us all to a greater vision of ourselves. There's something grossly out of place culturally in our knowing George Bush's name and none of theirs. But who doesn't know Brad Pitt? Who knows Dennis Kucinnich

MG> I wish it believed that Unions were the answer.

at least ours talk the talk

but I agree they can never be the only solution. A strong Health and
Safety Executive (ours is well-intentioned but understaffed and
lacking in political clout), tort suits with hefty damages allied to
prosecution of employers who break the law, will have some effect...

it was cheaper to move than pay decent wages. Now
MG> they're leaving the South for Mexico, China, India -- wherever,
MG> it's cheaper. And as soon as another country offers tax breaks,
MG> they'll up and move again. It's the global economy.

Yes -- we need a proper Trade Union International...

I can't wait until they
MG> curse us for sponging off their system and not even speaking the
MG> language.

I once taught a very OK Mexican lawyer who might be able to help you
out... he speaks and writes English like an angel (French, too, his
wife's French), and he won't call you deportee
