Said M. Donal McEvoy insists and/or persists with a bizaqrre form of
confusion.
The reason this is interestin is that it occurs (to my knowledge)
virtually only in the case of mathematics.The dialectic, so far
a thesis is presented: there are mathematical objects. with the usual
caveats (since they are alnmost by definiton abstract they are not in
space time etc, precisly liie any abstract object, there is no location of
triangularity, no more and no less there si any location spatial or
tempral of a tringle etc.)
objection:
this does not fit with some pre-determined idiotci view held by x, y, z
(usually x, y, z are kuhn lakatos, less so as time goes by feyerabend, but
even the odl nazi makes some small appeareanca)
counter: well do you have an argument against the following:
there are some mathematical facts (e.g. there are five dots after the word
'dots' .....) and they appear to be understood either best understood as
facts about five, about the property fo having teh same cardinality as
five, etc. no matetr what you say five dots are there
rebuttale
I can cook up a "scheme" in which there is "two" sets of cardinality "one"
and "more than one"
nobody knows what a scheme is, but compare and contrast:
there are no microbs because in the language alpha 9which I can make up
and if need be make up as I please) there is w word
for "cow" or "object bigger than cow", voila an easy way for nominalism
abotu mcirobs...
am I the only one to smell somethign rotten?
