Mike Chase: Eric never ceases to amaze me. He's been in a time-capsule since 1964. No wonder he has no solutions to offer in case of Iraq, other than to keep on pouring money and American lives into a sinkhole, just like in Vietnam.

Eric: Mike never amazes me. It's always the same hate leading the way with little of substance behind it.

Mike Chase: [Iraq] will be resolved when the Americans turn and run, tails between their legs . . .

Eric: This is Mike's solution, or what he hopes will happen. How unhappy he will be if we don't turn and run! How miserable it will make him if the Iraqis take over and run their own country! Even worse, how utterly dejected he will be if the Middle East modernizes and shows Islamic societies capable of advancing from postcolonial bedlam and adapting to the 21st century.

I dislike the Bush administration almost as much as Mike does, but I don't want to see immense chaos merely to validate my hate. And it's amusing that some deem the erstwhile leftist Hitchens a "swinish lacky" as soon as he stops parroting the party line. That tells me Hitchens is okay as long as he's their ideological lacky, but that he starts becoming swinish as soon as he has the effrontery to disagree. "Don't think for yourself or you'll become a hack," says the hack.
