Here you get a warranty from whomever you purchase an appliance; it lasts x 
number of years (usually one or two) and you have the option to renew the 
warranty for a yearly fee with some appliances.  If you don't renew the 
contract, 
or don't have the option, you simply call your local private repair company, 
choosing one at random from the phone book, and pay whatever they choose to 
charge per hour.  Generally where I live that's anywhere from $100 on up.  
Which 
means replacing an appliance is often cheaper than repair unless you can do it 
yourself.
