Consciousness is an obstacle in finding what one is looking for; an insight no doubt to be found in the esteern mystical tradition that Schopenhauer was so fond of. Self--consciousness as a burden; this is a long and beautiful tradition; check out Cioran also as a logical continuation of this kind of pessimism.
