No second thoughts-only more thoughts. The nourishment that the caterpillar
needs can be obtained easily--when one is not looking for it, i.e
unconsciously.  Consciousness is an obstacle in finding what one is looking
for; an insight no doubt to be found in the esteern mystical tradition that
Schopenhauer was so fond of. 

Self--consciousness as a burden; this is a long and beautiful tradition;
check out Cioran also as a logical continuation of this kind of pessimism.
(Pessimism?--surely not )
