All proposals will be refereed by the scientific committee chaired by David
Miller (University of Warwick)>
That's good news. Miller is among the best logicians who is also an expert and
(critical) supporter of Popper's "critical rationalism" - Miller independently
proved (the other proof was by Tichy) that Popper's definition of versimilitude
was logically flawed, a result that has opened up a very complex and still
unresolved technical debate.
Miller has also written two of the most important books on "Critical
Rationalism" ['CR'] aside from Popper's own work - "Critical Rationalism - A
Restatement and Defence" and "Out Of Error: Further Essays on Critical
Rationalism". Among the aspects of CR that Miller brings out, more clearly than
perhaps Popper, is how CR goes against the grain of some of our most
deep-seated tendencies of thought - for example, the common belief that there
is a postive justification and positive evidence for our beliefs (as opposed to
there being, at best, critical and fallible defence, and critical evidence, for
the truth of certain claims, believed or not). CR thus represents a radical
departure from the uncritical commonsense approach to knowledge, and to the
justificationist approach that has dominated Western thought from the time of
the Ancient Greeks.

Subject: [lit-ideas] klag
April 5 – 7, 2018 the Karl Popper Foundation Klagenfurt (KPF) at the
Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt, Klagenfurt, Austria will hold a symposium,
lasting for about 2½ days, on the topic “Popper and the Philosophy of
Mathematics.” Karl Popper contributed intensively to the theory of probability,
to mathematical logic, and to some other areas of mathematics, in addition to
his main interests in the philosophy of science, political philosophy, and
other areas of philosophy. We are looking forward to receiving proposals for
presentations on any topics in the philosophy of mathematics that relate to the
work of Karl Popper and to Critical Rationalism. Although there will be a focus
on probability theory and mathematical logic, papers on any topic related to
the interface of mathematics and philosophy will be welcome.
Scholars working in the areas outlined above are cordially invited to send
extended abstracts (of about 1500-2000 words) of papers to be presented at the
symposium in Klagenfurt. All proposals will be refereed by the scientific
committee chaired by David Miller (University of Warwick) and Reinhard Neck
(Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt). Authors of the best presentations will be
invited to submit their final papers for publication in a special issue of a
journal or a collective volume. Details to be announced after the symposium.
There will be no fees for participation, and the cost of meals and hotel
accommodation for three nights will be borne by the KPF. Travelling expenses to
and from Klagenfurt will in general be reimbursed only in part.
Please send your proposal (with an email providing basic information about the
speaker’s academic background, attaching an extended abstract, PDF preferred)
tokp-f@xxxxxx as soon as possible and not later than February 2, 2018. Authors
will be informed about acceptance or rejection by March 1, 2018, with more
details about the program and the venue of the symposium.
