when did stream of consciousness reveal itself? did it depend on the invention 
of the unconscious? a particular genre of literature? a certain life style of a 
burgeoning class?

was there no consciousness prior to it?
if so -- or rather if there was no formalized distinction between the conscious 
and its other -- how did one get away with murder?
