Requirements for a good fence:
* Before you start to dig, make sure you know where your buried
utility lines are located.
* Use wood that's resistant to decay for posts and any other
parts in contact with the soil.
* Get a good "post hole digger" to dig your holes, and have a
digging bar handy to break through rocks, and to tamp soil around
the post.
* Know your post holes! The rule of thumb: for every foot of
fence above the ground, you should bury the post six inches below
the ground.
* Use a mason's line between two stakes to keep the fence
straight. A bubble level should be used on posts while they are
being set to ensure that they're plumb.
* Farmers usually tamp soil around fence posts to secure them.
Locust posts are commonly used because the wood has decay
resistance. Prefab fence construction uses concrete poured around
the base of posts.
