M.C. It was not under Saddam that 50 Iraqi civilians were being
slaughtered, it's today, and every day. It wasn't under Saddam that some
25,000 Iraqi civilians overall have lost their lives : it's what's
happened *since* the American invasion.

EY: I think the International Red Cross estimate of Saddam's mass graves
at somewhere around 300,000 counters the utilitarian argument you appear
to be making.

Also check that new report of 25,000 dead. It was just discussed on NPR. They stated that 40% of that was from insurgents, another chunk from shootings by "criminals," and that most of it happened in the early weeks of the invasion. But I'm sure that won't prevent anyone from chucking the 25,000 figure around as though it were truly descriptive.

Does anyone have civilian casualty figures to compare with NATO's anti-Milosevic operations and subsequent stabilization process? Bet a lot of civilians died in those bombings (and aftermath) too.
