Thanks to Andreas and Eric for their info. I'll need to study it a bit. I'll probably take it to someone more expert than me, that would be just about anyone. I so very, very DO want to save what data I can.

I checked a computer forum and found two suggestions for Mike.

Computer: hp pavilion xt412 (laptop)
Operating System: Windows XP

Problem:
When I startup my computer, the following occurs:

Start menu, taskbar, desktop icons missing in Normal mode
Taskmgr available through CTL+ALT+DEL
Background wallpaper is the only thing showing
Booting takes a very long time, both to User selection then to wallpaper.

-------[FIRST SUGGESTION]--------

Except the slow booting I was confronted this week with the same problem, on a hp Win XP running laptop. Odd enough, it occurred after installing and using an AV program - which cleaned up to some 300 infected files. It became soon clear that this program wasn't the cause of the start-up difficulty; nor was any virus left, so the websites I visited for information about the removed viruses and their fake exe-files weren't of much immediate use either.
But feeling that some virus must have left undesired exe-files, on closer inspection I found with Msconfig (easy to start with the Taskmanager) that three exe-files that were not connected to any of my installed applications, had been started. In the Taskmanagers second sheet they were shown as running; the first two files were shown to be in the Windows\system32 directory; there I checked: their timestamp was this week's beginning. These were: csrs.exe, recall. exe and rundll.exe. None of these could be found on a friend's unpolluted Win XP running computer. So I assumed these to be the evil-doers.

Eventually, in the Taskmanagers second sheet I stopped the proces sing of csrs.exe - and without delay Taskbar, Start menu and Desktop icons were displayed.

Then I searched the Registry for all keys connected tot these 3 fi les, and found that they were pointing to nothing else but these three files. After copying to .reg-files I deleted the suspect keys - now I got no start-up problem any more.
The following shows the deleted Registry items:

[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOn ce]
netservices = recall.exe
Win32 USB Driver = rundll.exe
Com+ Sys = csrs.exe

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SharedTools\MSConfig\startupr eg\Com+ Sys]
key = SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Run
item = csrs
hkey = HKLM
command = csrs.exe
inimapping = 0

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunSer vices]
netservices = recall.exe
Com+ Sys = csrs.exe

[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
CTFMON.EXE = C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\CTFMON.EXE
netservices = recall.exe
Win32 USB Driver = rundll.exe
Com+ Sys = csrs.exe

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SharedTools\MSConfig\startupr eg\netservices]
key = SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Run
item = recall
hkey = HKLM
command = recall.exe
inimapping = 0

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
CTFMON.EXE = C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\ctfmon.exe
MSMSGS=\C:\\ProgramFiles\\Messenger\\msmsgs.exe\ /background
netservices = recall.exe

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunSer vices]
netservices = recall.exe

[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
CTFMON.EXE = C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\CTFMON.EXE
netservices = recall.exe
Win32 USB Driver = rundll.exe

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SharedTools\MSConfig\startupr eg\Win32USBDriver]
key = SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Run
item = rundll
hkey = HKCU
command = rundll.exe
inimapping = 0

[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
CTFMON.EXE = C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\CTFMON.EXE
Win32 USB Driver = rundll.exe

  Windows XP Desktop Missing Icons & Taskbar

Good day to all. Recently I had a terrible problem with my XP operating system after loading SP2. The system worked fine for awhile, then one day after rebooting for some hung programs, the desktop never populated with Icons or the taskbar. I was able to see my desktop background and the screen savers even came on as scheduled, but no icons or taskbar. I researched several sites on the web with an amazing variety of solutions, none of which worked for me. I finally hit the Windows Technical Help section at microsoft.com regarding SP2 technical issues. I described the symptoms and recieved a couple of responses from India telling me the issue was beyond the technician level and they were sending it up the chain. I finally recieved the fix and it worked perfectly! I have supplied it for all to use and hope it will work for all who have suffered this problem.

This issue can be caused by the conflicts between Service Pack 2 and third party programs or device drivers. At this point, let's perform some troubleshooting steps to find out the root cause of the problem. I appreciate your patience.

Reset Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service ========================================

1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to start Task Manager.
2. Click File, click Run, type services.msc and press enter.
3. Double-click "Remote Procedure Call (RPC)" in the Services list.
4. Click the Log on tab, and click "Local System Account" in "Log on as"
5. Click Apply and restart the computer.
